Don Cooper | Eyelid Movies

DON COOPER | EYELID MOVIES

Exhibition Dates: January 20 - March 2, 2024

Sandler Hudson Gallery is pleased to announce the latest body of work, Eyelid Movies, from celebrated painter, Don Cooper. Eyelid Movies is based on a concept Cooper first learned of in graduate school in the late 1960’s, implementing the idea of watching a psychedelic film on the back of one’s eyelids. It relates to methods of visualization brought about from seeing phosphenes; moving and fleeting images that appear when one’s eyes are closed or in a dark environment. The paintings in the exhibition are inspired by the concept of eyelid movies, drawn from the artist’s subconscious, resulting in something both experimental and experiential.

DON COOPER has lived and worked in Atlanta since 1976. He has been awarded fellowships from the Fullbright Program, SECCA 7, The Southern Arts Federation, CGR, and Awards in the Visual Arts. In 2004, Cooper was one of six Georgia artists to be included in the MOCA GA exhibition Transitions II, curated by Karen Comer Lowe. He is one of three winners of the inaugural 2007 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Grant. He was awarded the Judith Alexander Artadia Award in 2009.
