Melissa Harshman

For the last 10 years I have used the computer as a tool to create images. I am interested in the different ways the juxtaposition of a variety of recognizable images can be altered in meaning and narration by my new combinations and compositions. The computer allows me to move items easily, play with transparency and scale, as well as color. The image is then “brought out of the box” via traditional printmaking or painting methods.

In recent prints I have been incorporating images of jello as well as recreations of fashion images circa the 1950s. Together these images conjure a sense of nostalgia for the past, but also reflect the changing roles of women in society as well as the change in “taste” of gourmet culinary presentation and preparation.

The focus of these recent prints, as well as other work, has specifically been geared towards identity issues surrounding women. Some of the images are completely whimsical while others have underlying political content. My goal is to create images that are aesthetically pleasing and conceptually significant, often playing off the meaning of the chosen images.
