Kevin Cole
| One of the prevalent symbols in his works is the necktie, an item that has dual significance for him . On the one hand, it is the symbol of the world of power : business and politics; on the other, it is a reminder of the lynching rope that was once a part of African American life - a fact that was graphically communicated to him by his grandfather at a young age. When he turned eighteen and became eligible to vote, his grandfather stress the importance of voting by taking him to a tree where blacks had been lynched by their neckties as they tried to vote. This left a profound impression on Cole and his artwork often uses the tie-shape symbols to reflect the message in complex, but inviting sculptures and paintings. | ||||||||
