| In creating this new body of work I've experimented with mark making in its purist form. The contrast of heavy, bold lines with soft, lighter lines, serve as a focal point though out my paintings. The title of the show is Soft Light because this work is representative of techniques adapted through years of experience as a graffiti artist, as well as the influence of early Abstract Expressionist masters. The pieces are started by a slow build up of latex paint which is applied to wood or canvas and is scraped to a smooth finish. Layers and layers of marks are created using mixed media. Spray paint, watercolor, pencils, chalk, pastels, graphite, collage, anything available. These large mixed media paintings continue to change until a final layer is created and is suitable for presenting. Graffiti can be viewed in the streets where it belongs; my work is derived from the street, yet I'm continuing to push it in other directions outside the borders of traditional Graffiti. Translating street art to the gallery is difficult. If it weren't for Graffiti, I would have never started painting on wood, canvas or metal. It's very important for the viewer of my work to know the history of my mark making. This work is an attempt to separate the two worlds and to show versatility as a painter and as a mark maker. |
